Directions play a critical role in Wholistic Homes in creating a balance to energize the space with healing techniques. There are 10 main directions and 8 supporting directions which are mentioned in Vedic vastu shastra scriptures to guide us in creating a space of harmony and peace which have been modified to use to suit us in current times.

Rooms and Directions

Each room is related to a specific element and in turn a direction, they have a wonderful relation to understand.

10 Main Directions

  1. North-east (NE) the direction from where we receive cosmic energy into the house, it is also known as Dev or Jal tattva (which also means the water element). This is an ideal zone for pooja room or meditation space and living room.

  2. South-east (SE) the direction of fire element also known as Agni tattva (which also means the fire element). The sunrays entering from this area into the home makes a specific angle with the ultraviolet and infrared rays which destroy the harmful bacteria in this direction which helps to keep the food healthy when cooked in this zone. Ideal location for cooking purpose due to the presence of elemental property of fire which means the placement of the kitchen on the floor plan of the home is best suggested.

  3. South-west (SW) the direction of earth elements also known as prithvi tattva which represents stability, relationship, and skills of the master of the house. Ideal for master bedroom and working zone as it provides the support and strength to the head of the family which is needed from all aspects of life such as professional & relationship support, financial saving, and good health.

  4. North-west (NW) is the element of space or metal, it is also the direction of healing and preservation which is also known as Aakash tattva. Storing grains was suggested in ancient times due to its properties, now it is an average location for the living room, storeroom, elders and guest room. It also relates to the zone of banking and finances and other supports in life from mentors, masters, teachers, spiritual guides and angels.

  5. East (E) is the direction of the sun the solar energy, this direction invites social connection, status, growth, success, health & progress, an ideal location for the family and living room. East zone bedroom can be recommended for children and parents or guests.

  6. West(W) is the direction of the setting sun, which has more heat and infrared rays hence the west side of the home should have a minimum opening. This direction promotes spirituality and benefits when all elements are balanced in the house. For individuals inclined with interest in this subject and students of all ages can use this direction as their study zone to acquire knowledge. It is best suggested a location for the dining room, study, library and sometimes kitchen.

  7. North (N) is the direction of receiving magnetic energy from nature, this is the direction of treasures, incoming finances, opportunities, and career. This is an ideal location option for living room, study room, children's bedroom of all ages. The energy of this direction should be used to tap into the incoming flow of money when the directions are correctly used on the floorplan with balanced elements.

  8. South (S) is the direction for stabilizing ancestral status and fame. The energy coming from this direction is aggressive and strong hence there should be less opening from this direction as compared to north and east. This zone also belongs to the earth element and the zone of relaxation which makes it an ideal master bedroom.

  9. Upwards direction which is going up towards the sky, also called urdhavagati.

  10. Downwards direction which is below the ground level, also called as adhogati.

8 supporting directions to the main directions.

  1. North north east (NNE) this direction represents the health and immunity of the residents of the house.

  2. East north east (ENE) denotes the recreation, fun, happiness and growth factor for the family member in the house.

  3. East south east (ESE) belongs to the anxiety and analysis skills of the residents.

  4. South south east (SSE) is the direction of passion, power, and ambitions of the individuals.

  5. West north west (WNW) shows the mood swings.

  6. North north west (NNW) is the attraction and sex zone in the house. generally recommended for newlyweds or couples trying to conceive.

  7. South south west (SSW) represents the wasteful expenses in the house.

  8. West south west (WSW) is related to savings zone for the master of the family and education zone for the children in the family.
